Two Shoeboxes and a Podium: How Bubbles Became an EUC Enduro Champion at 52

Pro Division | Georgetown, TX

Steven "Bubbles" Michaelis is a 52-year-old electric unicycle racer from Georgetown, Texas who won the Endurance race at Lemonade Float Fest 4 — one of the premier EUC racing events in the country. He competes under USA EUC, the national sanctioning body for electric unicycle racing, and rides a Leaperkim original Sherman in the 150V ecosystem. He has no social media presence. He has two shoeboxes full of blown control boards and zero regrets.

Who Is Bubbles, the EUC Racer?

Bubbles is a professional EUC racer based in Georgetown, Texas, competing in the Austin-area EUC community. He's been riding electric unicycles for four years and racing competitively for two. At Lemonade Float Fest 4 — held at Reveley Peak Ranch in the Texas Hill Country near Burnett, Texas — he finished the weekend with four podium results across four race formats: second in the moonlight race, second in the seven-stage timed series, second in the Enduro, and first in the Endurance race.

He is 52 years old and weighs 209 pounds.

How Bubbles Got Into EUC Racing

Bubbles discovered electric unicycle riding after breaking an electric standing scooter. He went to YouTube looking for a replacement — and found something else entirely.

"This guy on the internet had an electric unicycle. Oh my gosh — this broke my brain. It looked like that's the future right there. That's the most wonderful, weird, crazy thing I've ever seen. I need one."

He ordered a Kingsong S18 from E-Wheels. A month later it arrived. An hour after that, he was making a beer run on it. A week later, he was over-torquing it.

"EUC brought out the racing in me," he says. "I've done similar kinds of hard things in parallel — but nothing else did that."

What Wheels Does Bubbles Ride? (And What He's Learned the Hard Way)

Current setup: Two Leaperkim original Shermans — 20-inch wheels, 150V ecosystem.

Getting there took a while. Bubbles has a direct way of quantifying the learning curve: two shoeboxes at home containing 14 blown Begode control boards from his time in the 134V ecosystem.

"I don't want to say anything negative about anyone — but there are 14 of them in a box."

His gear recommendation for heavier riders on technical terrain is specific:

"Any wheel is great — buy used, buy something new. But if you want to ride seriously, I think 150 volts with a 20-inch wheel with suspension is a good starting point."

Why 20-inch? Central Texas terrain — granite, rocky, fist-sized rocks, loose gravel — favors the larger wheel's stability and traction. Why 150V? At 209 pounds, lower-voltage wheels didn't have the power to handle what he wanted to do.

Lemonade Float Fest 4: Race Results and Course Conditions

Event: Lemonade Float Fest 4
Venue: Reveille Peak Ranch, Burnett, Texas
Format: Four-race weekend — Moonlight Race, Seven-Stage Timed Series, Enduro, Endurance

The course runs across rocky granite terrain at speeds reaching 35–40 mph on loose, switchy sections. Bubbles describes the conditions as legitimately pushing the edge of what electric unicycles can safely do at current performance levels.

"The consequences of crashes are starting to get kind of high. But the events keep getting better and better — the prize money is enticing, and the community is extraordinary."

His riding partner and training companion Rourke finished first and second in the same races — making the Austin EUC community responsible for the top two spots across the entire weekend.

Why Bubbles Races: The Transfer Effect

When asked what EUC racing gives him, Bubbles gets philosophical fast — and specific.

"There's a magical thing about EUC racing that's uniquely embodied. I feel a joy when I do it that's unlike anything else. I feel it in my body."

But the deeper answer is about what it does outside the course.

"The things I learned from EUC racing bleed over into the rest of my life. I push myself here and it helps me push myself better there. I do things that are hard and scary here — and it maybe helps me be a little bit courageous when I have to do something kind of scary back home."

"I look back on these moments and it energizes everything that I do. It's a deep joy for me."

He's four years in, competing at 52 years old, with no structured training beyond roughly 100 miles per week on the wheel. When the weekend ends, he goes back to work.

On the Future of EUC Racing

Bubbles has watched EUC racing grow from its early, scrappy days into a formalized competitive circuit under organizations like USA EUC — the national sanctioning body he competes under.

"I used to smile and groan at some of the growing pains we've experienced in the past. But we, as a community, we rally together. I'm excited about EUC becoming a little bit more mainstream."

He's also honest about what comes with that growth.

"There are little whispers in the back of my mind about how fast we'll be going as racing continues to mature. These events keep getting better and better — and the speeds are starting to match that."

At the 2025 Amped Electric Games in Bentonville, Bubbles backed up his Texas results on a national stage. Competing in the Sportsman class, he raced both the Thunderdome and the skills track — two formats that test very different things — and finished 2nd overall. It's the kind of result that doesn't happen by accident: Bentonville's trail system is technical, the Thunderdome is unforgiving, and the Sportsman field is full of riders who've put in the work. For Bubbles, it was further proof that the hours on the granite trails back home in Central Texas translate when it counts.

He returns to Bentonville every year — calling Amped Electric Games one of the best events he's experienced in any sport, for the trail design, community, and the way it pulls him out of his comfort zone.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Lemonade Float Fest?
Lemonade Float Fest is an annual EUC and PEV racing event held at Reveley Peak Ranch in the Texas Hill Country near Burnett, Texas, organized by Amped Electric Games. It features multiple race formats including moonlight racing, stage racing, and Enduro.

What is USA EUC?
USA EUC is the national sanctioning body for electric unicycle racing in the United States, launched by Amped Electric Games. It provides official competition records, athlete registration, and a competitive structure for EUC racers at all levels. Learn more at usaeuc.com.

What EUC wheel is best for heavier riders?
According to experienced EUC racer Bubbles, heavier riders (200+ lbs) on technical terrain benefit most from a 20-inch wheel in the 150V ecosystem with suspension. He rides two Leaperkim original Shermans and recommends against lower-voltage wheels for riders his size.

What is Enduro racing in EUC?
EUC Enduro racing is a longer-format race designed for sustained effort over technical terrain, as opposed to sprint or stage formats. Enduro events reward riders who can maintain speed and control over distance — a format that favors power management and terrain reading over pure sprint speed.

Who is Bubbles the EUC racer?
Bubbles is a 52-year-old professional EUC racer from Georgetown, Texas, competing under USA EUC. He's a four-year EUC rider and two-year competitive racer.
